Saber-Toothed Cat (Smilodon)

The iconic ice-age predator with 28 cm canine teeth/Dinosaurs & Extinct Animals

Smilodon fatalis was a large predatory cat that lived from about 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago in the Americas. Its upper canine teeth grew up to 28 cm long, though only about 17 cm protruded from the gums. Despite the name, it was not closely related to modern tigers or lions. Smilodon weighed roughly 280 kg and had a stocky, powerful build with shorter legs than modern big cats. Over 160,000 bones from La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles represent thousands of individual Smilodon.
