Pumice Stone

The only rock that floats on water/Geology & Minerals

Pumice is a lightweight volcanic rock formed when gas-rich lava is ejected during an explosive eruption and cools so rapidly that the gas bubbles are trapped inside. With a density often below 1,000 kg per cubic meter, pumice is the only rock that routinely floats on water. A typical bathroom pumice stone is about 10 cm long and weighs just 50 grams. In 2012, a pumice raft covering 26,000 square kilometers was spotted floating in the Pacific after an underwater eruption near Tonga.
