One of the first dinosaurs ever identified by science/Dinosaurs & Extinct Animals
Iguanodon bernissartensis was one of the first three genera of dinosaurs formally named, described by Gideon Mantell in 1825. It lived about 126 to 122 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous across Europe. At roughly 10 meters long and 3,000 kg, this herbivore had a distinctive conical thumb spike about 15 cm long that may have been used for defense or foraging. Early reconstructions infamously placed this spike on the animal's nose like a horn.
