Dodo

The flightless bird whose name became synonymous with extinction/Dinosaurs & Extinct Animals

The dodo (Raphus cucullatus) lived exclusively on Mauritius and had no natural predators, which is exactly why it didn't survive meeting Dutch sailors in 1598. Flightless, fearless, and apparently delicious, it was extinct by 1681. Despite its reputation for stupidity, it was simply a well-adapted bird that had no experience with mammals or their appetites.
