Amethyst Geode

A hollow rock hiding a purple crystal cathedral inside/Geology & Minerals

An amethyst geode is a hollow rock lined with purple quartz crystals formed inside volcanic gas bubbles over millions of years. A large display geode might be 60 cm tall and weigh 30 kg. The purple color comes from iron impurities and natural irradiation within the crystal lattice. The largest known amethyst geode, the Empress of Uruguay, stands 3.27 meters tall and weighs 2,500 kg. Most commercial geodes come from southern Brazil and Uruguay.
