Zanzibar (Unguja)

The spice island off the coast of East Africa/Landforms

Zanzibar (the main island Unguja) is a semi-autonomous island off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. Covering about 1,666 square kilometers, it was historically the world's foremost producer of cloves and a major hub in the East African spice trade and, tragically, the Indian Ocean slave trade. Stone Town, the island's historic center, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a maze of narrow alleys lined by Arab, Persian, Indian, and European architecture. The island was an independent sultanate until 1964, when a revolution overthrew the monarchy and led to union with Tanganyika to form modern Tanzania.
