Yak

A high-altitude bovine that thrives above 4,000 meters/Large Land Animals

The wild yak (Bos mutus) is a massive bovine native to the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding highlands, where it lives at altitudes between 3,000 and 5,500 meters. Yaks have several adaptations for extreme cold and low oxygen: an enlarged heart and lungs, three times more red blood cells than cattle, and a thick double coat of shaggy fur. Domesticated over 4,500 years ago, yaks provide milk, meat, fiber, and transport for millions of people across Central Asia. Their dung is dried and used as fuel in treeless alpine regions.
