A standard chest X-ray exposes the patient to about 0.02 millisieverts of radiation, equivalent to roughly 2.4 days of natural background radiation. The X-ray tube generates photons at energies of 20-150 keV, and the entire exposure lasts only about 20 milliseconds. Wilhelm Rontgen discovered X-rays in 1895 and took the first medical X-ray of his wife's hand. She reportedly said, 'I have seen my death.'
