The White House

The most famous residence and office building in America/Everyday Places

The White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue has been the official residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800. The building has 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, 6 levels, and a bowling alley. It was burned by the British in 1814, rebuilt, and has been continuously renovated ever since. The Truman renovation of 1948–1952 essentially gutted the entire interior and rebuilt it with a steel frame while preserving the exterior walls.
