Wave Rock

A 15-meter granite wave frozen in stone for 2.7 billion years/Natural Wonders

Wave Rock is a natural rock formation near Hyden in Western Australia that resembles a tall, breaking ocean wave. The 'wave' is about 15 meters high and 110 meters long, formed by weathering and water erosion of the granite over roughly 2.7 billion years. The curved shape was created by subsurface chemical weathering followed by exposure through erosion, while the colorful vertical stripes of grey, red, and yellow are caused by rainwater runoff depositing minerals. The formation is part of a larger granite inselberg called Hyden Rock.
