Water Buffalo

The workhorse of Asia, responsible for plowing most of the world's rice/Large Land Animals

The domestic water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is one of the most important livestock animals in Asia, where an estimated 130 million are used for plowing rice paddies, pulling carts, and producing milk. Water buffalo milk has roughly twice the fat content of cow's milk and is the basis for Italian mozzarella di bufala. Wild water buffalo, found mainly in India and Southeast Asia, are larger than domestic breeds, with males weighing over 1,200 kg. Their wide, splayed hooves are perfectly adapted for walking through muddy wetlands.
