Tolstoy's 580,000-word epic of Russian life/Literature & Writing

Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, published from 1865 to 1869, is one of the longest novels in the Western canon at about 580,000 words. It follows multiple Russian families during the Napoleonic Wars and contains over 500 named characters. Reading it aloud would take about 32 hours. Tolstoy's wife reportedly copied the manuscript by hand seven times.
