Viking Longship

The shallow-draft raider that terrorized medieval Europe/Ships & Boats

Viking longships were engineering marvels of the early medieval world. Their shallow draft allowed them to sail up rivers and land directly on beaches, which was very convenient for the Vikings and very inconvenient for everyone else. Built from overlapping oak planks (clinker construction), they were flexible enough to ride ocean swells yet light enough to be portaged overland between waterways.
