Uluru (Ayers Rock)
A sacred monolith that changes color at sunset in the Australian outback/Mountains
Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a massive sandstone monolith in the Northern Territory of Australia, sacred to the Anangu Aboriginal people for tens of thousands of years. It stands 348 meters above the surrounding plain (863 meters above sea level) with a circumference of 9.4 kilometers. What appears on the surface is merely the tip of an underground formation extending several kilometers below ground. The rock famously changes color throughout the day, appearing to glow red at sunrise and sunset due to the iron oxide (rust) in its arkose sandstone reacting to different light angles. Climbing was permanently banned in 2019 out of respect for Anangu wishes.
