The tallest pre-Columbian structure in the Americas/World Landmarks
Temple IV at Tikal in Guatemala, also known as the Temple of the Two-Headed Serpent, is the tallest structure at one of the greatest Mayan cities and the tallest pre-Columbian structure in the Americas. Built around 741 AD to honor the ruler Yik'in Chan K'awiil, the temple-pyramid stands 64.6 m above the jungle floor. Tikal itself covers about 16 square kilometers and at its peak around 700 AD had a population of 60,000-90,000. The site was famously used as the rebel base on Yavin 4 in the original Star Wars film.
