Thar Desert

The Great Indian Desert straddling India and Pakistan/Deserts

The Thar Desert (Great Indian Desert) covers approximately 200,000 square kilometers across the Indian state of Rajasthan and Pakistan's Sindh province. Unlike many deserts, the Thar is one of the most densely populated arid regions in the world, supporting about 83 people per square kilometer. The landscape features sand dunes, rocky terrain, and salt flats. The Thar is also one of the youngest deserts, becoming arid only about 4,000-10,000 years ago. Jaisalmer, the 'Golden City,' rises from its dunes with sandstone architecture that glows at sunset.
