Tasman Sea
The treacherous waters between Australia and New Zealand/Water
The Tasman Sea is a marginal sea of the South Pacific between southeastern Australia and New Zealand, spanning roughly 2,000 kilometers at its widest. It covers approximately 2.33 million square kilometers with a maximum depth of about 5,943 meters. Named after Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, who was the first European to sight New Zealand and Tasmania in 1642, the sea is notorious among sailors for its violent storms and unpredictable conditions. The Sydney to Hobart yacht race, one of the world's most prestigious ocean races, crosses part of the Tasman and has a reputation for danger. The East Australian Current, made famous by the film Finding Nemo, flows through its western edge.
