Taj Mahal

A mausoleum that puts every love letter ever written to shame/Everyday Places

The Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their 14th child. It took about 20,000 workers and 22 years to complete. The entire structure is clad in white Makrana marble that changes color throughout the day — pinkish at dawn, white at noon, golden in the evening. It is often cited as the finest example of Mughal architecture and a symbol of eternal love, though it is technically a grave.
