Table Mountain

Cape Town's flat-topped icon, one of the oldest mountains on Earth/Mountains

Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain overlooking Cape Town, South Africa, and one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in the world. Its plateau is roughly 3 kilometers from side to side and is flanked by Devil's Peak to the east and Lion's Head to the west. At approximately 600 million years old, it is one of the oldest mountains on Earth, predating the Andes and Himalayas by hundreds of millions of years. The mountain hosts an extraordinarily diverse fynbos ecosystem with over 1,470 plant species, more than the entire United Kingdom. The famous 'tablecloth' cloud that drapes over the summit is caused by orographic lifting of moist air from the sea.
