Launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957, Sputnik 1 was a polished metal sphere that orbited Earth for three months. Its radio signal was detectable by amateur radio operators worldwide. The satellite burned up on re-entry in January 1958 after completing about 1,440 orbits.
