Sperm Whale

The deepest-diving mammal and owner of the largest brain on Earth/Deep Sea & Ocean Life

The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is the largest toothed predator on Earth, reaching 18 meters in length and 45,000 kilograms in mass. Its enormous head makes up one-third of its body length and houses the largest brain of any animal (about 7.8 kg) plus a massive organ filled with spermaceti oil. Sperm whales routinely dive to 2,250 meters and can hold their breath for over 90 minutes while hunting giant squid in the abyss. Their clicks are the loudest biological sounds ever recorded at 230 decibels, technically loud enough to vibrate a human to death at close range.
