Spartan Aspis Shield

The bronze-faced hoplon carried by Spartan warriors/Historical Weapons

The aspis (also called hoplon) was a large, round, concave shield made of wood and faced with a thin sheet of bronze. Spartans famously marked theirs with the Greek letter lambda. The shield was heavy enough to be used as a weapon in close combat.
