The shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) is a large, solitary bird found in tropical swamps of central and eastern Africa. Standing up to 1.5 meters tall with a wingspan of 2.6 meters, its most distinctive feature is its massive, shoe-shaped bill measuring about 23 cm long and 10 cm wide. The bill is powerful enough to decapitate lungfish, its primary prey. Shoebills are known for standing motionless for hours and then striking with explosive speed. They are classified as Vulnerable, with fewer than 8,000 remaining in the wild.
