Shepherd's Tree Root System

The deepest known root system of any plant/Biology & Ecosystems

The shepherd's tree (Boscia albitrunca) of the Kalahari Desert holds the record for the deepest documented root system, reaching 68 meters below the surface. The tree itself is modest, growing only 5 to 7 meters tall, but its extraordinary roots tap into deep water tables far below the desert floor. The tree is an important food source for desert wildlife, producing edible berries and leaves. Kalahari San people have used parts of the tree for food and medicine for thousands of years.
