The torsion-powered siege engine of the Roman legions/Historical Weapons

The Roman ballista was a large crossbow-like siege engine powered by torsion springs made of sinew. It could hurl stone balls or heavy bolts with great accuracy over several hundred meters. Smaller versions called scorpiones were mounted on carts for field use.
