Roman Aqueduct (Pont du Gard dimensions)
The engineering that brought water to Roman cities/Historical
While Pont du Gard exists as a landmark entry, the Roman aqueduct system it served illustrates Roman hydraulic engineering at its finest. The Nimes aqueduct stretched 50 km from the spring at Uzes to the city of Nemausus (Nimes). The water channel maintained a precise gradient of just 34 cm per km. The Pont du Gard bridge section stands 49 m tall with three tiers of arches, making it the tallest Roman aqueduct bridge ever built. It delivered 20,000 cubic meters of water per day to Nimes.
