Red Panda

The original panda, discovered 48 years before its giant namesake/Small Animals

The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) was described in Western science in 1825, nearly half a century before the giant panda. Despite the name, they are not closely related to giant pandas and are the sole living member of their family, Ailuridae. Their bushy, ringed tail serves as a blanket in cold weather and a balance aid when climbing. They spend most of their lives in trees and are crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk.
