Pygmy seahorses (Hippocampus bargibanti) are among the smallest vertebrates in the ocean, typically less than 2 centimeters long. They were discovered in 1969 by accident when a marine biologist noticed them on a gorgonian coral specimen in a lab. Their camouflage is so effective that they are nearly impossible to spot in the wild. Like all seahorses, the males carry the young in a brood pouch. A single pygmy seahorse may spend its entire adult life on the same coral fan.
