The Siq at Petra

The narrow gorge entrance to the ancient Nabataean city/World Landmarks

The Siq is the main entrance to the ancient Nabataean city of Petra in Jordan, a narrow gorge 1.2 km long with walls rising up to 80 m high on either side. At its narrowest, the Siq is only 3 m wide. The gorge was formed by tectonic forces splitting the sandstone mountain, not by water erosion. Walking through the Siq with its towering multicolored sandstone walls is one of archaeology's most dramatic experiences, culminating in the first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) framed between the canyon walls.
