Perito Moreno Glacier

One of the few advancing glaciers left in the world/Natural Wonders

The Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park in Patagonia, Argentina, is one of only a handful of glaciers worldwide that are still advancing rather than retreating. The glacier's ice front is approximately 5 kilometers wide and rises 60 to 75 meters above the surface of Lago Argentino. Its total area is about 250 square kilometers, and it extends 30 kilometers in length from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Periodically, the advancing ice dams a section of the lake, building up pressure until the ice bridge ruptures in a spectacular calving event.
