Olympic Gold Medal
The most coveted prize in international sport/Sports
Olympic gold medals haven't been made of solid gold since 1912. Modern Olympic gold medals are actually sterling silver (92.5% silver) plated with at least 6 grams of gold. For the Paris 2024 Games, the medals weighed about 529 grams, were 85 mm in diameter and 9.2 mm thick, and uniquely incorporated a hexagonal piece of iron from the original Eiffel Tower. The design varies for each Games, but the IOC sets minimum specifications: at least 60 mm diameter, at least 3 mm thick, and the required gold plating.
