Neuschwanstein Castle
The fairy-tale castle that inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle/World Landmarks
Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany, was commissioned by King Ludwig II in 1869 as a personal retreat. The Romanesque Revival palace sits atop a rugged cliff at 800 m elevation above Hohenschwangau village. The castle is 150 m long, stands roughly 65 m tall at its highest tower, and contains about 200 rooms (only 14 were completed before Ludwig's death in 1886). Today it receives about 1.4 million visitors per year, making it one of the most visited castles in Europe and the direct inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland.
