The volcano that buried Pompeii/Volcanoes
Vesuvius looms over the Bay of Naples and is one of the most dangerous volcanoes on Earth, with about three million people living in its shadow. Its catastrophic eruption in 79 AD buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum under meters of ash and pumice, preserving them as time capsules. It has erupted more than 30 times since, most recently in 1944.
