Mount Rushmore

Four presidents carved into the granite of the Black Hills/Statues & Monuments

Mount Rushmore features the 18-meter-tall faces of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln, carved between 1927 and 1941 using dynamite and jackhammers. About 450,000 tons of rock were removed from the mountainside. The original plan included the presidents carved to their waists, but funding ran out -- proof that even national monuments are subject to budget cuts.
