Giant Moray Eel

The toothy ambush predator hiding in coral crevices/Deep Sea & Ocean Life

The giant moray (Gymnothorax javanicus) is the largest moray eel by mass, found throughout the Indo-Pacific. It has a second set of jaws in its throat (pharyngeal jaws) that shoot forward to grasp prey and pull it down, which is basically the biological inspiration for the Alien franchise. Morays lack pectoral and pelvic fins and have a ribbon-like dorsal fin running the length of their body. They are often seen with their mouths gaping open, which looks threatening but is actually just how they breathe.
