The Mojave Desert spans about 124,000 square kilometers across southeastern California, southern Nevada, southwestern Utah, and northwestern Arizona. It includes Death Valley, the lowest, driest, and hottest place in North America (86 m below sea level, with the highest reliably recorded air temperature on Earth at 56.7 degrees C). The Mojave's iconic Joshua tree grows nowhere else on Earth. The desert also hosts Edwards Air Force Base, numerous solar farms, and the ruins of Route 66 motels.
