Mediterranean Sea

The inland sea at the crossroads of European, African, and Asian civilizations/Oceans & Seas

The Mediterranean Sea is an almost-enclosed body of water connected to the Atlantic through the narrow Strait of Gibraltar. It covers about 2.5 million square kilometers and has an average depth of 1,500 m, reaching a maximum of 5,267 m in the Calypso Deep off the coast of Greece. The name means 'middle of the Earth' in Latin, and it has been central to human civilization for millennia: the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottoman Turks all built empires around its shores.
