Luna Moth

A ghostly green moth that lives only a week as an adult/Insects & Arachnids

The luna moth (Actias luna) is one of the largest moths in North America, with a wingspan of about 11.4 cm and distinctive trailing hindwing tails. The adult moth's lime-green coloring fades to white after death. Adults have no mouth and cannot eat; they live only about one week, surviving solely to mate. The spinning hindwing tails are thought to confuse echolocating bats by creating false echo targets. Each female lays about 200 eggs before dying.
