A typical lightning bolt is about 5 km long but only about 2-3 cm in diameter. It carries a peak current of about 30,000 amperes and heats the surrounding air to about 30,000 K, roughly five times the surface temperature of the Sun. A single bolt contains about 1 billion joules of energy, but because it lasts only milliseconds, you could not practically harvest it. Earth is struck by lightning about 8 million times per day.
