Largest Recorded Hailstone

The ice ball that fell on Vivian, South Dakota in 2010/Events & Phenomena

On July 23, 2010, a hailstone fell in Vivian, South Dakota, that measured 20.3 cm in diameter and weighed 0.88 kg. To put that in perspective, it was roughly the size of a volleyball and fell from a thunderstorm at terminal velocity. The stone was carefully preserved in a freezer and verified by the National Weather Service. The impact crater it left in the ground was 25 cm across. One does not wish to be outdoors when the sky starts throwing volleyballs.
