Lake Malawi

Home to more fish species than any other lake on Earth/Water

Lake Malawi (also called Lake Nyasa) is the ninth-largest lake in the world and the third-largest in Africa, located between Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania in the East African Rift. It is most famous for its extraordinary fish biodiversity: it contains more fish species than any other lake on Earth, with an estimated 700 to 1,000 species of cichlid fish, the vast majority of which are endemic. The lake is approximately 580 kilometers long, up to 75 kilometers wide, and reaches a maximum depth of 706 meters. Its clear, warm waters have earned it the nickname 'the Lake of Stars' for the way lanterns of fishermen in their boats appear at night.
