K2
The 'Savage Mountain,' the world's second highest and most dangerous peak/Mountains
K2, at 8,611 meters, is the second-highest mountain on Earth after Everest, located on the border between Pakistan and China in the Karakoram range. Known as 'the Savage Mountain' because of its extreme difficulty and high fatality rate, roughly one person dies for every four who reach the summit. The mountain was first summited on July 31, 1954, by Italian climbers Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli. K2 has never been climbed in winter without supplemental oxygen. Its pyramid shape and steep, exposed ridges make it far more technically challenging than Everest. The name 'K2' simply means the second peak surveyed in the Karakoram range.
