Jordan River
A modest river of immense religious significance/Water
The Jordan River flows approximately 251 kilometers from the Anti-Lebanon Mountains through the Sea of Galilee and into the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth's surface. Despite its enormous religious significance in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (Jesus was baptized in its waters), it is a surprisingly modest river, typically only about 2 meters deep and 15 meters wide in its lower course. Its waters are shared among Israel, Jordan, Syria, and the Palestinian territories, making it one of the most politically contested waterways in the world. Due to heavy diversion for agriculture, its flow has been reduced by roughly 90% since 1960.
