The Island of Hawaii, known as the Big Island, is the largest of the Hawaiian islands at 10,430 square kilometers and the youngest at under 700,000 years old. It is still growing: Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, has been erupting almost continuously since 1983, and Mauna Loa is the world's largest shield volcano. Mauna Kea, measured from its base on the ocean floor, is technically taller than Mount Everest at over 10,000 m. The Big Island contains 8 of the world's 13 climate zones.
