The great hammerhead shark (Sphyrna mokarran) is the largest of the nine hammerhead species. Its distinctive wide, flat head (called a cephalofoil) is thought to improve electroreception, allowing it to detect stingrays buried in the sand. The head also provides extra lift as the shark swims, functioning like a hydrofoil. Great hammerheads are solitary, nomadic hunters found in warm temperate and tropical waters worldwide. Despite their fearsome appearance, they are critically endangered due to overfishing for their fins.
