The enigmatic limestone guardian of the Egyptian pyramids/Statues & Monuments
The Great Sphinx of Giza is the largest monolith statue in the world, carved from a single ridge of natural limestone around 2500 BCE. With the body of a lion and a human head, it has been staring inscrutably across the desert for over 4,500 years. Its nose went missing at some point in history, and despite popular myth, Napoleon's troops were almost certainly not responsible.
