Grand Piano

Two tonnes of wire, wood, and exquisite tension/Everyday Objects

A concert grand piano (Steinway Model D) is about 2.74 meters long, weighs approximately 480 kg, and contains about 230 steel strings under a combined tension of roughly 200,000 newtons (20 tonnes). The cast iron plate inside must withstand this enormous force without warping. Each of the 88 keys can produce dynamics from pianissimo to fortissimo, and the entire instrument has a frequency range from 27.5 Hz (A0) to 4,186 Hz (C8).
