Gobi Desert
The vast cold desert spanning Mongolia and northern China/Deserts
The Gobi Desert stretches across southern Mongolia and northern China, covering about 1.3 million square kilometers. Unlike the stereotypical sandy desert, the Gobi is mostly bare rock and gravel (gobi means 'waterless place' in Mongolian), with only about 5% sand dunes. Temperatures range from -40 degrees C in winter to 50 degrees C in summer. The Gobi is famous for its paleontological riches: the first confirmed dinosaur eggs were discovered here in 1923, and it remains one of the world's premier fossil sites.
