Glacier Express

The slowest express train in the world, and proud of it/Trains & Rail

The Glacier Express runs between Zermatt and St. Moritz in Switzerland, covering 291 kilometers in about 8 hours at an average speed of roughly 36 km/h. It crosses 291 bridges, passes through 91 tunnels, and climbs to 2,033 meters at the Oberalp Pass. The route was completed in 1930 and is considered one of the most scenic railway journeys on Earth. The train's panoramic cars have oversized windows tilted outward so passengers can see the Alpine peaks above. The dining car serves multi-course meals on tilted glasses designed for the steep gradients.
