Giant Isopod

The deep-sea crustacean that looks like an enormous pill bug/Deep Sea & Ocean Life

The giant isopod (Bathynomus giganteus) is a deep-sea crustacean that can reach 50 centimeters in length and 1.7 kilograms in mass, making it the largest known isopod. Found at depths around 2,000 meters, it resembles an enormous version of the common pill bug (woodlouse) you might find in your garden, except this one lives in crushing darkness and has adapted to survive months or even years without food. In 2014, a giant isopod in a Japanese aquarium famously refused to eat for over five years before dying, setting a record for the world's most committed hunger strike.
